Giving to children.. On a budget

We all want to give our children a better childhood. We want them to have the opportunities we never had. But we also see how many children in our own communities, and all over the world that that have nothing, or close to it.

There are many ways and many outlets you can utilize to provide
to children without breaking the bank.

If you and your family have outgrown shoes, a great organization is Soles4souls. This organization provides footwear to people all over the world, yes, even here in the U.S. Soles4Souls accepts all types of shoes for all types of people: athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip flops, just as long as they are new or gently worn. They even accept half pairs in the hopes to match them up eventually.

Many of use pass along our children’s clothes to family or friends. Many go to consignment stores in the hopes of getting a small payout or getting clothes in exchange in the size our children are in now. But there are children, even in my son’s school, who wear the same clothes multiple times a week.
A Christmas, we adopted 2 boys during the school Outreach and on their list, were clothes. I am an avid couponer and during holidays, the coupons about. Mix those coupons with sales and you can get nice clothes for next to nothing. The clearance racks are a great place for clothing as well. Many churches (call local churches to ask) keep a small stock of clothing, food, and necessities for families who look to them for aid.
School Supplies are another item, while most parents can afford, there are some who cannot. Certain times of the year, I see school supplies on clearance. Last year, when the school supplies clearance was winding down, I purchased about 30 spiral and composition notebooks for $0.05 each. Glue sticks and pencils for $.20 [more than 1 item in the package] and pencil bags for $.30 each. Backpacks were only $2-4 as they were putting away Summer items.
While I used some of the items and made backpacks for our local Food Bank to hand out to their littlest clients, I donated some to local organizations who were having school supply drives.

If you are looking for toys, always check out clearance toys. Don’t forget the $1 Bin at many retailers have great items and after a specific season or extended time frame, those $1 items can go to 50% off.

One other way to gather items for giving is by entering sweepstakes. There are many giveaway by large and small companies, local and worldwide and tons of bloggers who have amazing giveaways. Some or for large items, gift certificates, small and personal items. Even cash !!!
If you don’t have children at home, it’s still okay to enter these. You can donate them or give them as gifts!

Buttercream Frosting on sugar cookies (a borrowed recipe)

Today was our Blue and Gold event for Cub Scouts.
In true fashion, I made cookies.

I saw a recipe another blogger posted, so I borrowed it for my cookies.

sugar cookies with buttercream icing and clear sprinkles

Fabulous Won posted a Buttercream Recipe she got from some she knew.

I omitted the Almond Extract because there are people in our Pack who are allergic to nuts. Even if it's imitation, I didn't want to take any chances.

The icing was light and fluffy since it had whipping cream instead of heavy cream.

My 6yo helped make it and was eager to lick the spoon [bowl, and spatula].

This is definitely a recipe I am keeping in my files.
It was super Yummy !!!

Star Wars Toothbrushes, thanks to GUM + a giveaway! US and Canada

My 3 boys love when they get to do reviews for me.
They kind of sighed when I said, "hey, new toothbrushes", but then.. they saw them!

Star Wars sometimes rules our house. Especially if hubby is involved!

When I was presented with the opportunity to review Star Wars toothbrushes, I jumped at the chance.
We try to change our toothbrushes every 45 days. My boys are hard brushers and while I know they are clean boys, You know, Sometimes they put their little dirty fingers in their mouths after playing outside, and well.. YUCK!

GUM has released these great Star Wars toothbrushes with the re-release of the Star Wars movies.

2 of the toothbrushes I received are manual toothbrushes. Now these are what my children use regularly and are most familiar with. I try to always make their brushing experience fun by allowing them the opportunity to choose their own toothbrushes. It's makes them personal and they feel more like brushing when they've gotten to choose their own style.

Now, I can say that all of my boys have issues with brushes for the recommended 1 minute. Especially my 2 year old. He's still trying to get the hang of it all, even though he's brushed his teeth for a year.

But mostly, my 9 year old really needs the most help. The smaller boys really watch him and it's important that he set a good example.

So the smaller boys have the manual toothbrushes and my oldest has the Light saber toothbrush.
The light saber toothbrush flashes for 60 seconds, which is the recommended time frame.
Yes, there were tears shed and complaining that I gave him the flashy one, as it was called.

If you have questions about Oral Care, definitely check out the GUM website. I have linked the Youth/Teens section here

As a special Thank You, GUM is offering an online coupon code for you! These toothbrushes are not yet in stores, but you can buy them on the GUM website.
You can receive $1.00 off the Manual toothbrushes by using the code: STARWARS

You can also enter daily on GUM's Facebook page to enter to win a trip for 2 adults and 2 children to the Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando [FL] from Aug 23-26, 2012. This awesome package includes passes travel, and accommodations. You can visit www.starwarscelebration.com for more details.

Now, since I did receive 4 toothbrushes but only have 3 boys, I debated on who gets what and how to have them not fight over these.
I spoke at length with my 9yo, who had many great suggestions, all in his favor, of course.

We [meaning I] ultimately decided to put the AWESOME Captain Rex Power toothbrush up for a giveaway. You cannot purchase this toothbrush on the website and these are not out in the stores until the Spring.

One winner will receive this great toothbrush!
This giveaway is open to US and Canada residents

I would like to thank the PR rep for allowing me the opportunity to have my family review these products. All opinions expressed are 100% mine. No monetary compensation was provided for my opinion.

My kids love Clorox Clean-Up Recipes for Fun

Spring break is coming for my boys. I like to find fun yet educational things for them to do. It’s better when they don’t know it’s educational.

I have been searching the Recipes for Fun website to create a list of things to keep all 3 of my boys interested.

So far, I am thinking the “Magic Milk Paint” would be good for everyone.

Christopher would like to do the painting and the older boys get to learn about the surface tension of milk (and so do I).

My oldest is very protective of his items. He is constantly checking to see if one of his brothers touched, moved or played with one of his things.

So another wacky science project I found is called “Dusting for Fingerprints”.
Luke is very excited for this one. Not only does he get to match up fingerprints to each of his family members, but now, he’ll get to brag to his fellow scouts about his cool experiment.

There are many wonderful and different ideas for families to do on the Recipes for Fun website.

I found one fun science activity just for my littlest and I to have fun with. It’s called “Bubble Blob”. Tell me what 2 year old does not like bubbles?
Now he won’t understand the properties of gas and oxygen bubbles. But he will understand that Mommy can make bubbles in the microwave and I’ll be the coolest person alive.

Once Christopher tells his brothers the “magic trick”, it may have to be repeated for them.

There is a fantastic opportunity for you to enter to win $10,000. All you have to do is register on the Recipes for Fun website under the How to Win tab. Not only are you then entered to win $10,000 but also daily prizes of $100.00 gift cards.

You can make and clean a lot of messes with that!

You can also submit your own cool ideas for each of the selections and you’ll receive 10 extra entries into the sweepstakes, plus a coupon for $1.00 off Clorox Clean-up instantly, just to say thanks.

The registration process is easy; it took less than a minute. There are so many ways to teach our children science, cooking, and arts and crafts. Sometimes those lessons can be messy, so don’t forget the Clorox to clean up life’s messy moments!

FRANKENWEENIE arrives in theatres everywhere on October 5th!

In Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.

Upcoming Giveaway Hop

The Great Swag Swap Giveaway Hop hosted by Gypsy Mama Logs and Mama goes BAM.
This is a special event to thank you, our readers, this is your 2nd chance to get your hands on some of the best swag from some of your favorite bloggers.
For now, save the date and come back at 12:01 AM February 29
for a list of all the participating bloggers.

I am going to have to go through all of my goodies so I can share them with you !

Lent has begun

Today is important for Catholics. It is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.
Now, I have only been Catholic for 12 years (this Easter), so really, I still consider myself a newbie in some areas.

Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday to Easter and symbolizes the 40 days (Not sure why they don't count Sundays but really it's 46 days) Jesus spent in prayer and reflection before his crucifixion.

In my home, we fast on Friday's and do not eat meat (fish or pasta). We choose 1 thing to "give up", to sacrifice as Jesus did for that the season. You are supposed to keep that item to yourself (suffer in silence is what I have heard) but I decided to share so that my children could hold me accountable if I trip up.
We also do small gestures of kindness. Whether it is to family, friends or a complete stranger.

We attend church (but we do that each week anyway), and talk about why it is important to remember this time of year and what Jesus did for us.

Our Lenten journey is supposed to be spiritual, repenting our sins and praying. I try not to put upon my children that they are horrible little mongrels and must pray for forgiveness during this time, but to show them that it's good to pray, to ask for forgiveness (throughout the whole year) and to respect others as Jesus would have done.

I like the email I received today...
Affirm All Is Possible: What is impossible with men is possible with God. Luke 18:2
What do you do during Lent? How do you enlighten your children about this season?

Take the Time to Call

Tip from The Dollar Stretcher

I have received many free items or refunds just because I take the time to call a company. I was using a dishwasher soap that left residue on my dishes. When I called the 800 number, I was told that a certain powder they sold was better than liquid, and they sent me a coupon for two free boxes of their item.

Our carbon monoxide alarm started acting weird after two years and I was going to throw it out and buy another. Instead, I decided to call the company to see if there was anything I could do to fix it. After giving the serial number, I was told a new one would be sent to me free of charge.

I could give you more examples! So, the old saying "if you don't ask, you don't get" is really true.
M. S.

Do you call companies to complain or praise the products? I've done it in the past.
For instance, Kid Essentials will send you coupons if you call them.

I emailed Glade once to praise them for their oil candles and I received several coupons for free products.

Who have you called lately?

Recycled Crayons and a new blog to read

So my favorite Etsy store that make recycled crayon shapes is no longer :(

This makes me sad because I loved supporting her business and she was so nice.

I was searching Etsy for a new store and came across: MadebyMAXX

Maxx and his Mom made new crayons (in shapes) from recycled crayons. I love this concept.

So decided to read more of Maxx's profile (written by Mom of course) and it turns out that he donates some of the proceeds to charity. He also save some of the profit for his education.

Maxx's Mom also has a blog, If you have a moment, check it out: http://mamaandtheminions.blogspot.com/

Finding Senior Discounts - an article from The Dollar Stretcher

I did not right this article, but thought it was worthy of posting. Many of us who have parents or In-laws on fixed incomes, and some of my readers, have reached their 60's. Any tips I can share that may help someone improve their living expenses, I will gladly post them.  Enjoy!

Finding Senior Discounts
by Debra Karplus, MS, OTR/L
Senior discounts add up for aging baby boomers

When you were a child, you always wanted to look older and actually be older; then sometime in your thirties, getting older stopped appearing quite so desirable. But, you've heard that good things come to those who wait. Warren Buffett, American business investor and philanthropist, shares his wisdom, "Someone's sitting in the shade because someone planted a tree a long time ago." Buffett, who is well past his youth, knows that there are many benefits for those who made smart money choices in their youth.

Senior discounts exist for many of the products and services you currently purchase. Different stores, enterprises and organizations have chosen a different age that is considered "senior." Ages 50, 55, 59 1/2, 60, 62, 65, 70 1/2 have significance, depending on where you are shopping or what you
are trying to accomplish. Seniors can save money on some of their fixed expenses.

No matter how frugal or simple a life you live, there are certain expenses (fixed expenses) that you can't avoid. Most of these pertain to managing your home and possessions. Your yearly real estate tax may be one of the biggest expenses you have. The good news for seniors is that many counties offer a
discount to homeowners of a certain age. Contact your county assessor's office to see if and when you may be eligible for this often-substantial discount.

Seniors can often save money on insurance. Auto insurance rates are often lower for seniors with good driving records. The AARP website <www.aarp.org> states that seniors can save $357 per year on auto insurance, as a member benefit. Some insurance companies offer discounts to seniors who have passed a qualifying safe driver class. Contact your insurance agent to determine if you deserve this lower rate. And while you're reviewing your insurance needs, assess whether it's still appropriate for you to carry life insurance; if you no longer have dependents and debts, you may be wise to cancel your life insurance policy. Additionally, if you're no longer actively in the work force, you may not need disability insurance either.

An enticing opportunity exists for people over fifty who are contributing to their Roth IRA. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows a larger yearly contribution, up to six thousand dollars annually. Check the IRS website at www.irs.gov to learn more about Roth IRA contributions.

Seniors can save money on their variable expenses, too. Travel is an area where big savings exist for seniors. If you're booking an air trip online, many airlines have a lower fare for those over 62. Peruse the airline website carefully before you book a trip and pay too much. Additionally, Amtrak trains offer seniors lower fares, typically a 15% discount. For example, a round trip ride to New York City from Chicago is $194, but it's $164.90 for seniors. See www.amtrak.com to view other schedules and fares. If you use your city buses, you'll likely find opportunities for seniors to commute for less. Rental cars may also cost less if you're of a certain age. Just ask!

Seniors can enjoy food and entertainment for special lower prices. Some of the fast food places sell coffee to seniors for a quarter; that may be cheaper than home-brewed coffee. Movies, theaters and concerts often sell tickets cheaper to seniors. They don't want to insult you by asking if you're a
senior, so you need to be proactive and ask. Many restaurants have a section on their menu for seniors.
There are other places that offer senior citizen discounts. Your bank may have special checking account offers for seniors. Even the place that does your routine car oil changes or cuts your hair may offer a senior discount. Get in the habit of politely asking when you purchase services.

Have you noticed actress and comedienne Betty White on television lately? Well into her eighties, she looks fabulous and has a thriving revived career. Treat yourself and your money and possessions with respect when you're younger, and you are positioning yourself for spectacular golden years.

The Penny Hoarder

A couple of months ago, I found this great site called, The Penny Hoarder.
Their emails are titled Wacky & Weird Ways to Make Money from THIS Week.

Today and email came across for their ways this week. These include, a company that advertises on your home, political surveys and a giveaway for an envelope of cash (yes, you read that right).

And while I clicked ALL 3 links to read up on them, the giveaway for cash definitely kept my interest.
I mean, a family of 5 on 1 income, who doesn't need extra cash, right!?

Now the money they are giving away, was made from Free items. You can read about it (and enter) here.

I really like their emails and have follow up on a couple of their tips and made money of my own.

Giving to charities, on a budget

Today, I will be focusing on giving to Charities, while on a budget.

Charities are struggling to accommodate all the people in need, because the need is so great. But with finances and the economy the way they are, many people are deterred from giving because honestly, they need to take care of their family first. There can be ways to do both, plus, if you have children, this is an amazing opportunity to show compassion for others, even when you have little yourself.

Volunteering: Many people do not have time to volunteer. Some work 2 jobs, or are single parents. Volunteering can be a family experience. This doesn't mean you have to work in a soup kitchen with a 4 year old in tow. They may not understand. There are many charitable organizations that love to have volunteers.

As I researched this topic, the articles were endless.

Charities that deliver meals to elderly or home bound was a very large part of this. This is not a holiday gift, this is an everyday thing. In your area, I suspect there is at least one organization that does this. Your cost is time and gas. You'll be making a difference in someones life and helping a charity in need. You can bring a child with you and as an added bonus, a homemade card is just such a welcome gift for so many of those in elder care, or who otherwise have no one who visits them.

Here is another one I liked.
Donations are a great need for low income families who have to choose between food, furniture, prescription drugs, children's clothes, or school supplies.
Many local churches help families in need with these very items. Do you have furniture in your home or garage that you no longer use? How about clothing your children have outgrown?
Contact a church in your area to find out if they have a list of items that families in need have provided. Many times, the church will have you bring the items to their office, as the families usually remain anonymous.

As spring cleaning comes around for so many and closets are emptied, before you toss the clothes in a garbage bag or give to an organization that may sell the clothing, please check around for local families who could benefit and would very much appreciate your generous giving.

If you do give financially, set a budget for yourself. If you can spare $10.00 per month, then stick to it. Many charities call or mail for financial requests, but stick to your budget. Find a charity that you identify with.

Please remember that if giving to a charity, donations could be tax deductible. Please check to see if the charity has a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Some organizations are not required to obtain 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. These include churches and other religious organizations.
